The world’s leading property experts descended on Cannes last week (12-15 March) to showcase developments and real estate opportunities across the globe.

With so many innovative projects on display, it’s hard to pick out the best. But judges did – at the 29th MIPIM Awards, which celebrate and honour the most outstanding and accomplished projects. Here we look at some of the winners in more detail.

Best mixed-use development

The Student Hotel Florence scooped the award following a two-year refurbishment of the 215,000 sq ft, 150-year old building. Originally built for diplomatic needs, the building had been used as public office space before Amsterdam-based The Student Hotel acquired it and transformed it to fit alongside its suite of ten other hotels across Europe.

Created by Scottish entrepreneur Charlie MacGregor, The Student Hotel aims to create the best spaces where students can ‘find their purpose and change the world - not just with the well-designed and thought-out rooms, or the many great shared communal facilities’. Maintaining its stunning 19th-century façade, The Student Hotel Florence has been fully refurbished inside. It features a rooftop pool, public piazza, restaurant, library, games room, gym co-working spaces, a large auditorium and communal spaces filled with shops and services. What’s more, every resident student can ride one of their bicycle fleet for free.

Having only opened last summer, it already has a superb 4.5 rating on Trip Advisor with many gushing comments about its contemporary design and unusual feel.

Best refurbished building

The new home of Christian Dior perfumes, the KOSMO real estate development in Neuilly-sur-Seine, on the outskirts of Paris, picked up the gong for best refurbishment.

Developer Altarea Cogedim connected two separate offices to create a near 300,000 sq ft restructured area. A new double-height reception, office space and showroom amazed judges while its balconies and floor-to-ceiling glazed walls give a 360-degree view of the city and the river Seine.

Best residential development

Hamburg’s WOODIE development, consisting 371 prefabricated student flats, won the award for best residential development. Already having won multiple design awards, WOODIE is truly one of Europe’s most unique architectural projects.

Each of the student flats, across its seven-storey structure, was pre-built 600 miles away in Austria before being stacked on top of each other by crane when on-site in Germany. Each pre-fabricated with inner furnishings, bathroom installations, windows and doors.

Best Futura Project

The Mille Abres development in Paris is not yet completed, but still impressing those who hear about it. Combining ambitious architecture and sustainable development in new ways, Mille Abres is redeveloping the landscape.

The urban park, conceived as a piece of land art, features 127 residential units, an inside street, food court, four-star hotel with 250 rooms, bus station, playground, nursery and almost 300,000 sq ft of office space – all built out of bio-based materials.

All of this is surrounded by nature. It’s thought to house more than a thousand trees. Work is ongoing and should be completed by 2022.

Best Futura Mega Project

Launched at MIPIM, the £250m Future Park visitor attraction near Harrogate in Yorkshire is set to create 1,000 jobs. The unique park, developed to celebrate the best in food and drink, will be one of the UK’s most significant cultural and energy-efficient attractions to be built in the modern-day.

It will feature farms with livestock, restaurants, factories, shops and markets as well as education, research and events facilities. Developers describe it as a ‘synergy of architecture, landscape and infrastructure’ built around an existing lake and it’s estimated it will attract around 3.5million visitors each year.
