The UK Government has been actively helping businesses move to fibre through the Gigabit Voucher Scheme. For many businesses, the Government will pay installation costs (up to £2500) which means you can make the switch and future-proof your business for no extra cost.
The scheme launched in March 2018. Since then, Glide are proud to have helped over 1,000 businesses across the UK upgrade their broadband connection and, according to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), Glide are one of the top ten providers. Glide customers have saved over £2.5 million on the cost of a full fibre installation. In 2019, Glide were awarded SME Provider of the Year by Connected Britain for ‘liberating their customers from poor or lagging connectivity’.
£58 million of the total fund of £67 million has been allocated by the DCMS. The time to take advantage of the remaining Government funding is now.
According to BT Openreach, copper phone lines used for standard broadband and ADSL connections will soon become obsolete. As part of the UK Government’s £1.8 billion investment plan, the DCMS plans to connect the whole of the UK with full-fibre broadband by 2033. Included in the pot is a £200 million fund for Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) which stimulates the telecoms market must invest in fibre connectivity for homes and businesses, and £200 million for the Rural Gigabit Connectivity Programme (RGC). Both address the obsolescence of copper.
"The ADSL was terrible. We were receiving speeds of around 2Mbps and an intermittent service. The internet was fundamental to the business, and we were in need of something more reliable from a provider that offered pure connectivity with low maintenance" Dan Lowe, CEO, Fourpure
Why is Gigabit broadband good for business?
The main reason is productivity. The average UK standard broadband speed is just 11Mbps. With an upgrade from Glide you’ll benefit from speeds of between 100Mbps and 1Gbps. Upgrading your internet connection means reducing lag and buffer time and more productive employees. With quality video conferencing, connecting with clients is less time-consuming, travel fatigue is reduced and the need for face-to-face meetings is reduced.
In addition, 40 percent of UK businesses are using cloud-based solutions. When connected to ultrafast broadband, the cloud offers the agility needed for organisations to optimise their products and customer service, and for workers to enjoy faster and more robust connections.
Not only that, but we have our own National Core Network and carefully manage traffic to minimise contention, making us even faster for your business.
The evolution of the Glide National Network is a key component of a customer-centric approach which continues to raise expectations of both broadband speed and reliability. Owning the physical infrastructure connected to the Glide National Network ensures complete freedom for Glide to deliver speed, resilience and bandwidth to customers.
Operational efficiency passed on to Glide customers that can not be offered by Glide competitors.
This innovative and cost effective approach to deliver fibre connectivity across the UK means more ownership and control so there are fewer third parties to deal with during deployment and more freedom and ownership to deliver progressive support agreements. If something breaks it is much easier and quicker to fix it. New customers benefit from an established and robust infrastructure and with comprehensive UK coverage chances are a new customer is close to the Glide National Network.
What exactly is the Gigabit Voucher Scheme?
It’s a £67 million voucher subsidy scheme run by the DCMS to upgrade small and medium-sized businesses to gigabit-capable connections. With additional funding available for premises in more remote parts of the UK, this is a scheme designed to help realise the vision of a full-fibre UK.
